The Group is aware of the issues linked to water availability is committed to rationalizing its use wherever possible, by avoiding wastage and reducing its consumption. Better management of our processes, making our teams more accountable and factoring environmental criteria into the design and realization of tools and workstations are all measures that are already in place.
In 2021, the washing of aircraft and engines remained the activity using the most water and here innovation can play a key role in reducing such consumption:
AFI KLM E&M uses the EcoShine procedure to clean its aircraft exteriors. This process in which recyclable pads are used requires 80 times less water: 150 liters to clean a Boeing 777 compared with the 12,000 liters previously.
AFI KLM E&M has also developed an innovative, environmentally-friendly system to increase engine on-wing performance and lifespan. Engine water wash can be carried out during a maintenance visit to the hangar or at the airport. The system optimizes engine performance, leading to lower fuel consumption (0.5 to 1%) and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Engine water wash is carried out according to environmental principles: the used water is recovered for recycling.
